ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course provides teachers with advice and tips from an experienced teacher and examiner, to deepen their understanding of Outstanding assessment in OCR A Level PE. Participants will develop their understanding of the marking process for the examinations, and will develop practical strategies for effective marking, tracking, and providing targeted feedback, to support outcomes for learners. Delegates will be involved in marking and standardising exam questions, including extended answer questions. The course will also cover standardisation, including moderation, to ensure accuracy and consistency in assessment.

  • Reviewing assessment of the 2024 papers.
  • Utilising feedback from OCR via Results Plus.

10.30am: Best Practices for Efficient and Accurate Marking

  • Tips from an examiner
  • How accurate is your marking? An opportunity to mark, assess and grade student work for short answer questions from the 2024 exam series.
  • Exploring examples of top-quality work to set benchmarks for excellence

11.40am: Marking Extended Answer Questions Accurately and Effectively

  • Understanding the marking process for extended questions
  • Explore when to assess extended answer questions and how to prepare learners for these assessments
  • Marking practical workshop

12.30pm: Ensuring Accuracy and Consistency of Marking

  • Develop techniques to maintain accuracy consistency in marking across different components and exam papers
  • Strategies for effective moderation and standardisation – ensuring consistent assessment across the department

  • The importance of peer-assessment and self-assessment techniques to engage students in the process
  • Creating effective tracking systems to monitor individual and cohort-wide progress

  • Identifying students (thriving and struggling) who may benefit from additional support or extension
  • Implementing targeted interventions to address students’ personal needs
  • Collaborating with staff and parents to create a complete approach to intervention
  • Monitoring the impact of interventions and adjusting strategies as needed

  • Reflecting on personal assessment and marking practices
  • Developing an action plan for implementing changes

COURSE LEADER

Kate McDonnell has worked as a Head of PE for over 10 years in an Outstanding college. She is an experienced leader, overseeing a large Science and Sport curriculum area which achieves consistently outstanding results. Kate has achieved consistently outstanding results with her cohorts in A-Level PE (ALPS 2, VA 1.18), and in 2024 her cohort achieved 100% A*-B grades. She also works as an examiner for OCR, and previously AQA, has authored several resources, and delivered revision conferences for students nationwide, and CPD courses for teachers.

As a practitioner, delivering the course every year to cohorts of students, Kate not only understands the A-Level course and how to maximise learner outcomes, but can provide tangible, and realistic strategies to achieve this.
